OVERVIEW
The Good
Amazing theme, with great artwork and components
A very challenging co-op providing incredibly satisfying wins
Incredible scalability/variability inside the core-box with varied invader and set-up environments to change-up and refresh gameplay.
The Bad
This game is pretty heavy.... okay very heavy, set aside some extra time to read the rules and common mistakes
The invader turns, movements, and battle calculations can feel a bit tedious or mechanical at times, as you resolve their actions each round

In this game, each player selects the spirit they wish to use that round (each with their own unique powers. Each turn the spirits will perform specific actions using those powers to play cards, set up defenses, and attack invaders. Each round, Spirits will select their actions and cards to play, with ‘fast actions’ happening first. Then the invaders will have their turn to ravage the island, build more settlements, and invade more land. Finally, ‘slow actions’ which you had previously chosen at the beginning of the round take affect.
The game ends when you have rid the island of all invaders. As you play your actions, you will inevitably create ‘fear’ which changes the end of game objective from ridding ALL invaders, to just ridding towns and cities, and finally just eliminating all cities, which is significantly easier to do. Part of what I love about spirit island is the little details. The symbolism in spirit and Dahan (island natives) components being made of wood, while the invading colonizers are made of plastic (probably BPA-filled plastic!) is fantastic. The maps look great, and the spirit/card artwork is exceptional.
This game takes co-op to the next level. Sure, you can each be your own spirit and defend your own corners of the island, but tit will be very difficult to win that way. The game stands out in the synergies between the spirits and player actions, that allow you to stay ahead of the invaders and make incredibly satisfying turns.
